Miner’s Gala
The Miner’s Gala was a huge success this year, not only because of the glorious weather but also because of the number of people that attended. We had lots of visitors in the Durham County Council/Cultural Services marquee.
- The timeline and research projects proved to be of great interest. We are only sorry we could not display something of everyone’s work.
- The Durham Record was as popular as always and the oral recording of Jim Tinnion recalling his mining memories added another dimension to the display.
- Old photographs provided an insight into mining in Durham.
- Jane was available to give talks to small groups about researching mining history.
- We gave out hundreds of purple bugs, balloons and Durham Miner pens
At times it proved difficult to move around the Durham Miner stand because of the number of people looking at the displays.
It was very hot and humid in the marquee and tying the balloons was a huge challenge for the team. Purple fingers were the fashion for the Durham Miner team during the day.
The purple Durham Miner balloons could be seen floating away over the city all day long, as well as being attached to pushchairs, toddlers, hamburger stalls and adults. Quite a few balloons also decorated the roof of the marquee!!
It was a very enjoyable day for everyone and a definite highlight in the Durham Miner Project.

We would like to say a big thank you to all of our course participants who visited us during the day, it made the day extra special to have our own ‘Big Meeting.’
Competitions
We had two competitions during the MIner's Gala, a quiz and a
'design a banner' competition. The winner is banner number 7 by Lewis age 8. Well done to everyone who entered, it was a really hard to decide a winner.
The winner of the quiz was Danielle age 10
Research
There is a substantial amount of research now available on the website including both research projects and timelines. Research is being added to the database regularly, so keep looking!
Digitisers Still Needed
We are still in need digitisers to type up our research projects. We have hundreds waiting to be digitised and would appreciate hearing from anyone who wishes to practice their typing skills or would like to contribute to the project in this way.
