Mining Heritage Walk

Jeanette is organising a guided walk on mining heritage. The walk passes disused coke ovens, sites of old mine workings and bell pits. The walk takes place on 20th September at 2 o’clock, leaving from the visitor centre at the Stag’s Head in Butterknowle. The length of the walk is five miles, there is only one steep hill and the rest is relatively easy.

The walk is part of Durham County Council’s guided walks programme and there is a charge of 2 for adults and 1 for concessions. Please contact Jeanette at the Durham Miner Project if you would like further details or pick up a "Guided Walks Leaflet" at any branch library in County Durham.

Oral Recordings

Quite a number of oral history courses have been completed. We now have some wonderful recollections of Durham’s mining past which will be added to our website at a later date.

The oral history equipment has proved to be useful in another way by allowing some course participants who would otherwise be unable to complete their workbooks to have their answers recorded.

Website

The website is now growing rapidly with research added regularly. We are still in need of volunteers to digitise research projects, so if you can help, however small your contribution please get in touch.

New courses

The next batch of courses begins in September and the details are listed on our course timetable.
