Mining Heritage Walk
Despite disappointing weather a group of 30 hardy people set off from the Gaunless Valley Visitor Centre in Butterknowle, led by Jeanette, for a walk around the former mining sites of Butterknowle. The group included a party of German students and their leaders who were on an educational visit to Durham.
During the walk we visited sites of the mining heritage of the village including former bell pits on Cockfield Fell, the architecturally unique skew bridge, built in 1830 without a keystone, which carried the Haggerleases branch of the Stockton & Darlington Railway over the River Gaunless, Butterknowle and Marsfield Collieries and Butterknowle Brick works, remains of beehive coke ovens, tram ways and mineral railways and Quarry Pit now landscaped as a picnic and play area, before returning to the visitor centre.
We will keep you updated about any other future mining related events we know about.
