Pamphlets
We are all busy at the moment completing the pamphlets from the level two courses. We will shortly have a complete set of 23 pamphlets and an index. They will be available in some of the libraries in County Durham later this year for you to use.
Conference
Two members of the Durham Miner team travelled to Birmingham to the ECA (Educational Centres Association) Spring Conference earlier this month to deliver a workshop about the project. The conference entitled ' Treasure Houses for Adult Learning' explored ways to improve access to learning via museums and heritage sites. The conference delegates were shown how the Durham miner project had used a Mountain to Mohamed and Mohamed to Mountain approach to heritage resources. Everyone was greatly impressed by the project and what had been achieved by the team and the course participants.
Coal Mining Oral History Project
This new and exciting project begins on the 1st of April and runs until September 2005. Sheila Forster has now left the Durham Miner project and is the co-ordinator for this new project. Sheila will be responsible for collecting, recording, archiving and making accessible to the public oral history interviews with former coal miners and mining family members.
The project will also involve working with schools to produce an oral history resource pack. This pack will contain a CD ROM of oral history testimonies and copies of documentary evidence and will be distributed to all the schools in County Durham. It is hoped that as well as covering various Key Stages in the National Curriculum, the resource pack will help to promote a better understanding between the generations by helping the children of County Durham to acknowledge and appreciate the contributions their forebears made to the making of the county.
