About the Project

Newsletter Archive: Issue 18 - January 2004

Last Shift Begins

The last shift of Level One - Introduction to Local Mining History courses has gone down. There are now courses taking place at many venues around the County. Mining villages old and new as well as modern towns have now helped to dig up our mining past .

Website Update

There have been a lot of additions to the website recently. As well as more and more research projects being added there is now a Miner Mapping facility and an image database.

The image database is a collection of photographs and postcards relating to mining in County Durham. You can search the database using keywords and place names. The database will be added to as more images become available.

Maps of County Durham from the 1850's to present day are currently available via the Image Database, with all County Durham mines in the same time period being referenced. Users can move around the maps and zoom in or out, before clicking on individual features to find further information. It is planned that there will be a 'front door' entrance to the maps added to the site at a later date.
