About the Project

Newsletter Archive: Issue 19 - February 2004

Neil has finished his last shift

Neil, the project manager has hung up his mining boots and left for pastures new. Neil has gone to NEMLAC (North East Museums, Libraries and Archives Council) to develop e-learning in the North East so he will still be able to keep an eye on us from afar.

Courses closing down

The last round of Durham Miner courses is almost complete. When they are complete we will be focusing on digitising all the work and adding it to the website. So if yours is not on the site yet keep checking the research projects as it will be added in the next few months.

Community Heritage Project

We have news about a new project that you might find interesting.

What is it?

This new and exciting project aims to help look after and care for the heritage collections that are being built up by communities across County Durham. It will also help to make these collections accessible and help communities more generally raise awareness about their past.

What is involved?
The project will:

  • Run for 3 years initially.
  • Set up a programme of community based exhibitions throughout the County.
  • Support local history and community groups in making local cultural heritage more accessible through a number of other activities, such as events being held at shows, story-telling sessions in schools, new local history publications or village trails.
  • Offer workshops in collections care, interpretation, and oral history recording.
  • Produce a community heritage newsletter three times a year and develop a website.
  • Offer support and advice on a number of subjects such as collections care, publications or sourcing of funding for individual projects.
  • Help in establishing catalogues of own collection through training and on-going support.
  • Fund the purchase of display equipment to enable high quality exhibitions to be held.
Joining In
If you would like to become involved in the Community Heritage Project or would like more information please contact Julie Hawthorn, the Community Heritage Officer ( Tel. 0191 3019402). Any involvement, however small, will help us to continue and expand on the varied work already underway in the community in respect of local cultural heritage.
