About the Project

Newsletter Archive: Issue 07 - February 2003

Research rolls in

The first round of level one courses have either finished or about to finish. Well done to all of the people who have attended and produced absolutely brilliant work. We have had research on many topics including: individual collieries, allotments, importance of women in the collieries, jokes and humour of the pits and education in lead mining. At every course there have been lively and interesting discussions as well as a lot of individual learning.

Presentations well received

Jane Hatcher has visited most of the courses and presented information on local history research and the local area. Jane has been well received at each venue and has provided a very interesting session for all who attended. You are invited to attend any of the presentations even if you do not want to undertake the course. You can check times and dates using the Presentations Timetable.

New courses about to start

The second round of courses is about to start and details can be found on the Courses Timetable. There are second level as well as first level courses listed.

Yesterday Belongs to You

Plans for the "Yesterday Belongs to You" event are steaming ahead. The event is on April 5th at County Hall from 10.30 am till 4.00pm. There is no admission charge and refreshments are available from the County Hall canteen.

Oral History Course

We want to hear from people who are interested in doing the Oral History course; anyone who is interested should contact Sheila Forster or one of the team. We are planning courses where there is demand, so please get in touch.

Research Being Displayed

Arrangements are being made to display the research of local people. We will have some research on display at the "Yesterday Belongs to You" event and at some libraries throughout the county. We will give you more details at a later date

Staff Introductions

As in a previous newsletter we are introducing you to individual members of the course. For this edition we would like to introduce Linda Dobson. Linda works on a part time basis on the project as well as working one day a week at her original job at Belmont Library. Linda is working with the council’s web team to create a multimedia website and will create an online learning environment on the Durham Miner website. One of Linda’s jobs on the project is to create this newsletter. Linda has worked in libraries since leaving school, which was many, many years ago and is thoroughly enjoying working on the project.
