About the Project

Newsletter Archive: Issue 05 - December 2002

Annfield Plain Pilot Course

The pilot course at Annfield Plain has almost been completed. Everyone has enjoyed the course and has learned a lot about collecting and presenting local mining information. The Durham Miner team would like to express their gratitude to the participants for their contribution to the pilot study.

Local Mining History Courses

Several courses are planned for January 2003 in both the East and the West of the County. The courses being offered are level one courses. The courses will help you research local mining history as well as any other aspect of local history you may be interested in. If you are interested in any of the courses just contact any of the Durham Miner Team by email, post or telephone.

Brandon Local History Week

The Durham Miner Project had a display at Brandon Library during their recent local history week. Brandon Library is one of the locations where a level one local mining history course will be held in January. Dates and times for the course in January are to be arranged, if you are interested please get in touch with one of our team.

Team Members

We would like to introduce you to individual members of our team and explain a little more about what they will be doing in the project. Janet Hughes and Sharon Amesbury are our Local History Co-ordinators. Janet will be working mainly in the East and Sharon mainly in the West. Their role in the project will be to encourage people to join our local mining history courses. Janet and Sharon will be delivering the courses at local venues throughout the County. The courses will enable people to research, record and present local mining history.

Janet lives in the East of the County and comes from a coal mining family. Janet is interested in the history of her local area and in the history of coal mining in Durham. Janet’s full time job prior to joining the Durham Miner Team was a Senior Library assistant at Seaham Library.

Sharon has recently moved here from the Preston area and lives in the West of the County. Sharon loves the North East of England and is particularly interested in villages in the West of the County. Sharon previously worked with the Integrated Access team delivering basic IT courses throughout the County.

Video Footage

The NCB video footage that we were given permission to use is in the process of being adapted so that it can be displayed on the website. If anyone has any video footage that they think would be useful, please contact us for a chat.

Happy Christmas Everyone

The Durham Miner Team would like to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
