Durham Miners Gala 2002

Thanks to an overwhelming response from visitors to the Durham Miners Gala 2002, we have a large number of people who wish to get involved in the project. This is wonderful because more people should lead to more research and content. I am certain that this project is going to be a huge success.

What happened to the MOLE?

Mining Online Learning Environment (MOLE) has been amalgamated with 2 other complementary projects, which now give us the ability to cover the whole of County Durham and part of Sunderland. The new overall project will be called Durham Miner.

What has changed?

The aim of MOLE still exists. That is, we will be setting up project groups throughout the former coal mining areas of County Durham and part of Sunderland to research content for an exciting multimedia website. The change comes with regards to the benefits for the project groups. By doing the research for the website, not only will you be aiding in preserving an essential part of our heritage for future generations, but you will be given the chance to gain qualifications in the process - for free!

What are the other Projects?

In order to give us the opportunity to reach people in the west of the County, a project called Lead to Limestone (L2L) has been developed. Like MOLE this will involve project groups researching their local history and presenting it in some way. It is intended that their findings will also be added to the website.

Mining Information interNet Environment (MINE) is the project which enables us to guide people involved in the MOLE and L2L projects through Open College Network Qualifications in Local and Oral History. There will be no charge for those who wish to get involved.

Development of Groups

Already there is interest from a number of groups throughout the county. We will also support people who would prefer to work on an individual basis. We are currently looking for people to act as group co-ordinators / leaders.

Video and Audio Footage

We are currently looking for old mining video footage that we can put onto the website. It does not matter what format it is in, or its quality. If you have some or know where we can find some, we would love to hear from you.

Part of the website will present oral interviews with former miners. If you are a former miner or know someone who is, and would be willing to partake in an interview, please contact us.
