About the Project

The Durham Miner Project operated throughout County Durham and part of Sunderland during 2003 and early 2004. It involved groups of local people, supported by a team, researching their local mining history.

Research projects are available in the research projects section of our website. The material has been added to preserve our local heritage for generations to come.

How was the Project funded?

There are a number of groups who funded this project; Durham County Council, the New Opportunities Fund (NOF), the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), European Social Fund (ESF), and the North East Museums Libraries & Archives Council (NEMLAC). Please see our list of supporting organisations and project partners.

Local History Courses

The Durham Miner Project developed three Local History Course which were offered at venues throughout the County. Everyone was welcome to participate and best of all, it was free! The courses were self guided although the Durham Miner Project Team was close at hand to offer support if required. Each course lasted approximately six weeks and resulted in a recognised, accredited qualification.

A list of completed courses is available for your reference.

Presentations

As part of the Durham Miner Project one of the team delivered a series of presentations at local venues.

Each presentation lasted for two hours and covered the subject of "How to approach your local mining history research in local libraries, museums and archives". The presentations took place in the informal group settings of our course venues. The first half of the presentation focused on general local mining history and the second half on mining history specific to the local area. Please see the list of presentations that have taken place.

History of the Project

There were many high points and just a few low points in the project which have been summarised in a timeline of memorable events.

Monthly Newsletters

Each month, the Durham Miner team released a newsletter to inform people of current activities. A newsletters archive is available with details of past events.
