Chester-le-Street Schools - Timeline

Pre1827
Several private schools operate in the town
1811-60
Round School, or Dovecote School in Church Chare
1826
Mechanics’ Institute established. Also housed an infants school, followed by a Grammar school
1840
First National School built in Church Chare. A second National School also built in Church Chare
1876
Education Act made education compulsory (later Acts 1880, 1891, 1899)
1876
National School built in South Burns
1888
Victoria School for Boys built in Co-operative Street
1911
Grammar School moved to present site (now Park View Comprehensive)
