Bevin Boys and the Durham Coalfield - Timeline

3rd September, Britain went to war with German
1940
May, Ernest Bevin was appointed Minister of Labour and National Service
1943
Manpower crisis in coal mining
1943
December, a selection scheme for 18-year old conscripts began
1944-47
“Bevin Boys” recruited each month, trained and employed at selected collieries
1947
23rd August, two “Bevin Boys” were killed in the “Louisa Morrison” disaster at Annfield Plain
1948
The last of the “Bevin Boys” was “demobbed”
1989
The “Bevin Boys’ Association” was formed
1995
The “Bevin Boys” were officially recognised at parades, galas etc.
