Annfield Plain Timeline

1727
The first railway bridge the Causey arch was built near Stanley. By James Wood who committed suicide before the bridge was used as he thought it would fail
1842
The mines act. This abolished female labour in the mines and prevented children under 10 working in the mines.
1851
Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace
1871
12th August-The first ever Durham Big Meeting or Miners Gala. Idea of William Crawford
1909
16th February- Burns Pit Disaster at west Stanley Colliery, 168 men and boys lost their lives
1914-1918
First World War
1923-1926
The shaft was sunk for the Morrison Busty Pit at Annfield Plain. Work was delayed until 1936 due to the General Strike ( closed 1956)
1926
May-General Strike
1940
January-Food rationing intorduced
4ozs of butter, 2ozs of sugar, 4ozs of ham and bacon per week
1943
December-Bevin Boys Scheme introduced by Ernest Bevin Minister of Labour
1946
The coalmines were nationalised:- The National Coalboard
2003
January-The mystery of the missing graves of men killed in the Burns Explosion solved. Graves found in St. Andrews Grave Yard at Stanley
