Hi, im currently studying an english/history degree at leeds metropolitan university and as i am moving into my final year i am expected to begin my a 10,000 word dissertation. I am interested in focusing upon durham mines as the main line of my work however i am having difficulty in thinking of a specific angle to take and also how to start my research. So far i have 2 ideas
1- how the 84-85 miners strike affected durham miners and the anxiety that it caused
2- the effect the strike had on the closure of Sacriston pit in 1985
If anyone has any ideas for a potential topic or perhaps would be able to provide me with some information on one of the above topics i would be greatly appreciated. if you think you could help please send me an e-mail. thankyou. jonathan haggerty, [email protected], chester-le-street, 12/07/2003 19:51:20

Durham Miner's Lore. I am currently collecting traditional remedies, recipes, poems and superstition - eg charms, beliefs etc passed down through Durham miner's families. Perhaps you might know some - please email me - An example is 'A red flannel shirt helps prevent a bad back'. This information is for my mining history programme with Durham Miner Org. This social history is a part of our cultural heritage that must not be lost - please contribute. dorothy kelly, [email protected], woodland, co.durham, 17/06/2003 18:13:12
Here's another person looking forward to what this site will be when it's all up and running. I want to learn where my coal-mining Oliver ancestors worked in County Durham...and what their lives were like. Can't wait!! A very interesting, and valuable project. As, at least two of my genealogical ancestors came with their families from other counties to work the coalfields of County Durham, and thus leading to generations who worked the mines, I would be particularly interested in any similar stories that are developed. I would be happy to contribute mine, when the time is right. Doug Poulter, [email protected], Palm City, Florida, USA, 12/05/2003 18:36:31

Looks like this has the makings of an excellent online resource, about an industry now alas disappeared in the County (from someone whose father, gf, ggf and gggf were coal miners) Dave Malcolm, Consett, County Durham, UK, 31/03/2003 15:18:38
