In memory of my grandfather, Richard Hicks of Hetton-le-Hole, who served in the DLI throughout WW1 on the Western Front. On two occasions he left his mates in the front-line trenches to fetch supplies only to find on his return that they had all been killed by enemy shells. On his demob he continued his work as a coalminer in the Hetton/Easington area and retired with a 50year certificate of service from the NCB (his war service was counted). He loved crown bowls and was a Durham champion. Thanks Grandad! Malcolm Jones, Sydenham, Kent, 18/08/2003 22:42:19

In my last e-mail I forgot to write that my late father - John Whitfield Currie - had fought in Korea where he sustained the only injury of his military career. He was shot in the left arm by a sniper. He had his first heart-attack in the summer of 1946 whilst in Burma. Sorry. Graham Currie, London, England, 24/07/2003 02:59:48
I'm writing this to the memory of my late father, John Whitfield Currie, who joined the DLI in 1939 - serving in India, & in Burma (1944-1946) [I don't know which battalion he was in]. This is also to provide an update for men who served with him who might wish to know what happened to him after the war. He met & married my mother Edna in 1947, settling in Anlaby Common, in East Yorkshire, having six children with her - one of each (sorry, just an example of his sense of humour). He spent six months in a hospice in 1961 with pulmonary-tuberculosis. He & his family moved to Cottingham in East Yorkshire. He died at home of a heart attack in October of 1979. Reference Mr Whittaker's letter - he will not be forgotten, nor will the efforts & sacrifices of his comrades. Graham Currie, London, 24/07/2003 01:14:21
My branch of the Royal British Legion takes care of five war graves from the First War for the War Graves Commission. They are in the village of Thurstonland but why are they there? I decided to research it and found that four of them had died in a local hospital.I found this by getting copies of their death certificates. The fifth soldier cannot be traced at the Registrar's office. He is Private L Walton, 81704 of the 3rd Battalion Durham Light Infantry and died on 5th June 1919. We would like to find out who he was and how he died so if anyone knows of him we would be pleased to send a photo of the grave to any next of kin. Many thanks.
