1816
William Chaytor became owner of the Witton Castle Estate, including the William Pit situated in the Park of Witton Castle, named Witton Park
1818
William Chaytor junior became the first Chairman of the new Stockton and Darlington Railway
1825
Opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, starting at Witton Colliery, for the purpose of carrying coal from the South Durham coalfields to the River Tees at Stockton
1834
Drilling into the bottom of Witton Colliery, two new seams of coal were discovered, which boosted production for transportation on the new rail service
1846
Gala opening of the Witton Park Ironworks. The employment of 1500-1800 men was forecast
1871
Opening of Witton Park School. The school was later re-erected as the Church Hall at Cabin Gate, Bishop Auckland in 1910
1877
Opening of St. Paul’s Church (Church of England)
1884
Witton Park Ironworks closed down, leaving the village devastated and destitute. Some workers returned to the pits, but these were soon worked out
1881-91
Many people left Witton Park, deciding that, without work, there was no future here. At the end of the 19th century Witton Park was down, but not out
