Road Safety

Durham County Council places great emphasis on providing a complete road safety Education, training and publicity programme for everyone who lives, and works in County Durham. There is a comprehensive programme of delivering education to schools, colleges and other organisations within the county area. Driver training is a speciality of the Road Safety Section delivering the National Driver Improvement Scheme, Speed Awareness Courses, Safer Driving with AGE (SAGE) for older drivers, Young Driver Training Courses and BikeWise advanced motorcycle training, for newly qualified and 'born again' bikers. Fleet training for company drivers is a new area of work that is growing steadily.

The Road Safety Officers work closely with the Council's School Travel Plans team, adopting an holistic approach to encourage safer, greener and healthier school travel.

The section also manages the Councils' School Crossing Patrol Service providing over 200 safer crossing places for children on their way to and from school.

Alongside the pure educational approach, high profile publicity programmes help us to get the right message out to the road using public, Encouraging safer driving, riding and walking.

Working closely with Road Safety Engineers and the Police, supporting Engineering and Enforcement solutions, completes the 4 E's approach to casualty reduction.
