Derwentside Community Information Points

Information for Everyone

Derwentside Community Information Points are a joint initiative involving Durham County Council, Derwentside District Council and local community partnerships. The project aims to ensure a wide range of information is readily available in local communities.

Access to Information for all

Visitors to Community Information Points have the opportunity to access information on a variety of topics including:
  • Council services
  • Local events and activities
  • Health
  • Housing
  • Benefits
  • Job opportunities
  • Funding opportunities
  • Childcare
Information is available both in leaflet format and via the Internet. Each information point, has a computer with office software, colour printer, scanner and offers free Internet access.

The Community Information Points are popular with all sections of the community form teenagers to pensioners who are using the PCs for everything from on-line shopping and email to research and homework help. All members of the community are welcome to use the information points free of charge when local centres are open. The CIP project worker and community volunteers are also available to assist users new to ICT and the Internet.

Improving Accessibility

Community Information Points are designed to ensure everyone has access to the Information they need. each point has a large keyboard, screen reading software and induction loop facilities. The screen reading software is proving to be very popular with Information Points users. This software is very simple to use and enables text and pictures to be enlarged to up to 32 times the original size, it also has the facility to reverse colours making webpages and other electronic information accessible to a people with a variety of visual impairments. Additional equipment is also being installed to enable residents of Derwentside to speak to some service providers by video link avoiding the need to travel to central offices to speak to advisors.

Opportunities for Volunteers

A network of volunteers assist users who are new to computers or who need help searching the Internet Many of our volunteers run regular drop in sessions to answer queries and offer informal support to users, others are available to support users as and when required. Volunteering as part of the CIP project offers people the opportunity to meet new people and gain valuable work experience. Support and appropriate training for volunteers is also provided.
