2001 Census Results

Between 30 September 2002 and 17 February 2003, the Office for National Statistics published the results from the 2001 Census which was taken on 29 April 2001.

The Census information provides statistics on a range of issues including population counts by age, the health of the population, the ethnic background of people in different areas, lone parents, household size and structure, and the economic status of residents.

The initial release of data detailed the population by age (in five-yearly age groups) and gender for each local council area in the country and also give details of change in these areas between 1981 and 2001.

This release of the initial data was followed by the release of the full data at both a ward and a ‘Census Output Area’ level (OA): each ward is made up of a number of OAs.

You can visit the Office of National Statistics website for an explanation of Census Output Areas and access Population Results for County Durham.

Following the full release of data the County Council produced a series of statistical summaries from the 2001 Census for a variety of geographical areas. These can be accessed from the 2001 Census Summary Sheet pages. Further population statistics are available in the County Durham 2000 Population Estimate pages. In addition these figures are available in an interactive report created using InstantAtlas - 2001 Census Summaries - InstantAtlas Interactive Report.
